Abstract

conomic development has been a historical key element in the configuration of urban landscapes. This happens more relevantly from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and its consequent processes of commercialization and colonization, where developed countries sought to reach new territories and resources for sustenance. This was even more manifest during the second half of the 19th century. In association to this phenomenon, innovation was developed in all fields. In the case of the built environment, the generation of new construction methods that incorporated new materials and technological advances were used to accommodate productive activities as also to comply with the necessities of workers and their families. In this context, wood took a center stage worldwide, allowing to create light structures that answered to these necessities but also giving a new character to landscape, combining global and local values, as is the case in Chile. This article explores the economic conditions that were associated to this phenomenon, as also the precedents of international foreign wooden structures, examining its most relevant expressions in Chile and its evolution that originated unique and singular landscapes.
