Abstract

The history of Rwanda cannot be reduced to the genocide, but at the same time, memories of the past cannot be built by silencing the pain of victims and victimizers, denying its existence. Given the overall lack of knowledge about the country, this genocide (that took place 20 years ago) is as unexplainable as the new image of economic prosperity and political stability. The purpose of this article is to contribute to the historical-political analysis of Rwanda from July 1994 to c. April 2014,foregrounding the existence of spaces for civil society to elaborate the memory of the recent past and solutions to overcome the ethical rupture constituted by the genocide.
