This research paper is part of Fondecyt project 1120886 and has the objective of analyzing the allophones of codal /s/ in the speech of Santiago professionals, including articulatory descriptions and corresponding phonetic notation. It is a perceptive and acoustic study of the realizations of /s/ which aims at establishing in what respects phonotactic rules governing informal speech differ from those of formal speech. Different allophonic variants of /s/ were examined in four phonetic environments – /s/+plosive and affricate, /s/+resonant, /s/+fricative and /s/+approximant – in two genres – interviews and reading.
